Facebook rolls out 'nearby friends' feature

Facebook on Thursday began rolling out a feature allowing users of its mobile app to use smartphone location to discover friends near them.
The optional "nearby friends" feature "helps you discover which friends are nearby or on the go," said product manager Andrea Vaccari in a blog announcement.

"If you turn on Nearby Friends, you'll occasionally be notified when friends are nearby, so you can get in touch with them and meet up," Vaccari said.

"For example, when you're headed to the movies, Nearby Friends will let you know if friends are nearby so you can see the movie together or meet up afterward."

With the feature, Facebook takes a page from other location-based services including the network Foursquare, numerous dating apps and the recently launched social network aggregator SocialRadar.

With the Facebook feature, Vaccari said, "You can choose who can see if you're nearby (for example: your friends, close friends, or a specific friends list) and you can turn it on and off at any time."

He added that the location sharing must be mutual: "You and your friends both have to turn on Nearby Friends and choose to share with each other to see when you're nearby. Your friends will only be able to see that you're nearby if you share this info with them and vice versa."

Facebook will also allow users to share a precise location with the particular friends for a set period of time.

"When you share your precise location, the friend you choose will see exactly where you are on a map, which helps you find each other," said Vaccari.

Facebook had an estimated 1.23 billion users at the end of December, and more than one billion who use the social network on a mobile device.

The "nearby friends" feature will be available for Android and iPhone users in the United States over the coming weeks.

Websites affected by Heartbleed: Change your Gmail, Facebook and Yahoo passwords immediately

As you may know by now Heartbleed has pretty much given the Internet its biggest scare. The security flaw allows potential attackers to get passwords, credit card information, and other information that’s usually encrypted.

Because Heartbleed’s threat is so massive, it’s very possible that a few individuals will end up becoming victims to identity theft. It’s as yet unclear whether any cyber criminal syndicates or hackers knew of its existence and have been using it, but ever since the revelations were made, there’s a state of panic among users. Because Heartbleed can break SSL encryption, Internet majors such as Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Dropbox, Tumblr, Amazon Web Services could be victims.

Thankfully, a patch has been released which can thwart the Heartbleed attack, but users are still advised to change many of their passwords. Since some attackers could already have accessed your password, you are vulnerable regardless of whether the website in question has applied the patch.

So which ones must you change? Mashable has a handy chart ready and it doesn’t make good reading if you are a heavy user of Internet services.  It’s also reaching out to the top 10,000 websites to check on their vulnerability status. Here’s the Github page for the entire list.

If you want to verify first-hand whether a website or service is affected, you can check it out in this tool, which tests pages for the Heartbleed vulnerability.
Yahoo, Google and Facebook
Firstly, all of Yahoo and Google’s services could have fallen prey to Heartbleed and Facebook is not safe either. So you better get started on changing those passwords. Facebook had said in a statement, “We added protections for Facebook’s implementation of OpenSSL before this issue was publicly disclosed. We haven’t detected any signs of suspicious account activity, but we encourage people to … set up a unique password.”

LinkedIn, Twitter seemingly safe
LinkedIn is not affected by Heartbleed. “We didn’t use the offending implementation of OpenSSL in www.linkedin.com or www.slideshare.net. As a result, HeartBleed does not present a risk to these web properties,” the company is quoted as saying by Mashable.

Twitter claimed in a tweet that none of its services were affected by Heartbleed, though it still advised users to change their passwords.

Better change your Google password now
Amazon sees mixed results
Amazon.com is not affected by Heartbleed, though Amazon Web Services, which many website operators use would have been vulnerable to its threat. Thankfully, AWS in a statement said it had plugged the flaw on their services.

Banks, government websites remain safe
Most Banking websites remained safe, though it never hurts to change passwords every now and then. Some government websites were rumoured to have been open to attacks, though the situation remains unclear for websites such as Healthcare.gov, the US insurance online marketplace.

Dropbox, LastPass big worries
One of the biggest dangers is that Heartbleed could be used to bring down a password storage service, which will give attackers access to a bigger cache. LastPass, is one such service, thought to be affected by Heartbleed. The company said that even in spite of using OpenSSL, its services remained free from harm. “Though LastPass employs OpenSSL, we have multiple layers of encryption to protect our users and never have access to those encryption keys.”

Dropbox also seems to have been affected, though it said in a tweet that all its services had been patched. Even so, it’s advised that you change your password now before it’s revealed that someone has had access to passwords all this while.

OKCupid, Soundcloud also open to attack
Websites like OKCupid and Soundcloud were also found to be vulnerable, according to Mashable’s list. OKCupid was quoted as saying, “We, like most of the Internet, were stunned that such a serious bug has existed for so long and was so widespread.” On the other hand, Soundcloud says it is signing all users out and when they sign back in, the fix would have been in effect.

Estimates suggest that nearly 2/3rds of the Internet is affected by Heartbleed, which could have potentially disrupted all internet activity, if used by the wrong hands. So it’s a great achievement for the White Hats who discovered the bug and quickly rolled out a fix. Now all that’s left for you to do is change your password and make it a tough one to crack.

Hike Messenger

Instant messaging (IM) has become a trend these days especially with the youth. A trend, pioneered by the immensely popular WhatsApp IM application, others like Nimbuzz and Samsung's proprietary ChatON messenger are trying to follow suit as well.

The latest entrant in this genre is Hike, a communication app that offers both instant messaging and SMS under one roof. Developed by Bharti Softbank, a 50-50 partnership between India's Bharti Telecom and Japan's Softbank telecom provider, the app is the brainchild of Kavin Bharti Mittal.

A cross platform messenger app, Hike is similar to WhatsApp but is better in the sense that it also allows users to communicate over SMS, which is certainly a big advantage for those who do not have access to mobile Internet or data on the-go and for communicating with your friends without Hike app from within the same app.

That said, we played around with the app a bit on the iOS and Android platforms to see what is refreshing about it that has made it the No.1 Top Free app in the Google Play Store (It is placed at the third position under Top Free apps in the India Apple App Store).

Let the SMS-ing begin!
Hike offers messaging in three different ways. Hike-to-Hike messaging with other phones is unlimited and free worldwide. Second, you can communicate with other smartphone users who don't have Hike via SMS, which is only restricted to India at the moment. Finally, you can message any other phone user via SMS. But beware, if you constantly bug another user with Hike, they are given a code that they can use to block you.

On the bright side, each Hike user gets 100 Free Hike SMS every month to message those friends who aren't on Hike., which gets replenished each month and in case any friend joins the app on your request via SMS, you get 10 Free SMS extra and the company will also be awarding each user with 50 free SMS per month for each friend they have invited to Hike. Other ways of inviting friends are through Facebook, Twitter and email.

Furthermore, Hike users will also be rewarded one-time SMS bonuses of 100 each for connecting to Twitter and Facebook and the company plans to keep offering such bonuses time and again. These one-time bonuses will be valid for life until you run out of them.

Getting started and user interface
The user interface of Hike is very clean, simple and basic with pleasant hues of white and blue. Once you've downloaded the app, you'll be prompted to enter your mobile number. While the iOS version sends a 6-digit verification code via SMS that expires within a minute (reminiscent of Google Authenticator), the Android version simply greets you to the welcome screen asking you to enter your name and complete the registration. This is then followed by a tutorial of the app's basics.

Also, as soon as you enter the app, an Inbox message welcomes you with a reward of Rs.10. Every time you successfully invite a friend via SMS you earn credit of an additional Rs.20. In order for you to earn rewards, your friends must download and activate the app soon after you invite them.

Features and usage
Hike-to-Hike communication via instant messaging has features such as group chat and photo and video sharing, which are right up there with any top smart IM app. Group chats can be initiated by an icon in the top right corner while a '+' icon on the bottom right can be used to send a new message. The app supports various audio and video formats and uploads up to 6MB for each file.

That said, we experienced almost instantaneous responses over a stable Internet connection, especially with group chat that works pretty well and so does the image and video transfer. This is, of course, dependent on Internet connection speeds.

Using the app is fairly simple. The app smoothly integrates your entire existing phone contacts. You can access various menu options such as Home, Invite Friends, Free Messaging and more by swiping left. Swiping right reveals Search bar along with Favourites and Friends on Hike.

UC Browser

Mobile browser apps have been steadily evolving and are now able to offer as many features as their desktop counterparts, while the default Android browser and Safari on the iPad still feel a little limited in comparison.

If you haven't already picked a favourite browser, then UC Browser is a pretty good option that's also free. The app was recently updated for Android, and we tested both that and also the UC Browser+ for the iPad. Both versions of the app are fast, load quickly and add a lot of useful features, but is that enough to get you to switch from your favourite?
UC Browser gets you all the bells and whistles that you've come to expect from a desktop browser - tabbed browsing lets you go through multiple pages quickly, while a speed dial at launch gives you quick access to your favourite sites. Support for extensions can add a lot of useful functionality as well, and you can move to full screen browsing with the touch of a button.
Overall, the browser is fast and easy to use, and loads pages quickly. The latest Android version also includes support for hardware acceleration of page loading for devices with 2GB RAM or more. However, that's still a fairly high benchmark, and only a handful of phones have that much RAM for now though newer phones will meet this requirement.
One new feature on Android is the addition of a full download manager, which is very useful when trying to save multiple files - the app also lets you choose the page elements you want to save, which can be very helpful if you either want to save only the images, or if you're on a slow connection and don't want to get stuck downloading heavy elements, for example.
The app also auto-loads the version of the page that is most suited to your connection speed, which is an interesting feature which actually does come in handy. However, there are a couple of issues.
For one thing, on a phone screen, all the options take up a fair bit of space, though there is a full screen mode to get around this. The other issue is that the tabs aren't immediately accessible - you have to call up the tabs menu to see the different pages you've loaded.

The iPad version of the app also has some great features, such as social browsing. If you sign in with Facebook, then you can see links that your friends are sharing in the sidebar to quickly open. It also lets you load a floating video, so you can watch the clip while continuing to browse pages. That's an interesting feature, though it was hard to figure out when it would actually be useful.
Page sharing is also more robust than in Safari, but again, requires you to sign-in to your various networks from the app to be useful. Possibly the best feature though, is the addition of multitouch gestures - this is something that really makes it stand out from Safari. A two-finger swipe to the left and right are back and front respectively, while two fingers swiping up opens a new tab and swiping down closes the tab.
Overall, the app is powerful, and loads pages quickly on both platforms. It's also fairly easy to use. The catch is that while it's a lot better than the default browsers, UC Browser isn't a huge standout as compared to other popular browsers out there, such as Dolphin, or Coast by Opera.
Those apps have many of the same features as well; this means that if you've taken the time to set up a browser to work the way you want, with all your bookmarks and other saved data, then it's not going to be worth making the switch now. If you're still using the stock browser though, you'll find UC Browser a worthy upgrade.
UC Browser is available as a free download for Android, iPhone, iPad and other platforms.

How to get better battery life on Android

Make these simple adjustments to give your Android phone or tablet a battery boost.

Android gets a bad rap for short battery life, but that's only if you stick with its default settings. Make these simple adjustments to give your phone or tablet a battery boost.

Disable location reporting and history
GPS is a huge battery hog, as it harnesses data from the phone's GPS chip, cell phone towers, and Wi-Fi hotspots to find your location. The more a phone surveys your location, the more battery it uses. And that goes beyond just Google Maps.

Location reporting and location history are two GPS-based services with somewhat unclear motives. According to a Google Help page, the services can be used in conjunction with any other Google Apps, and may be used to improve your experience.

Chances are you can probably live without them, so disable these two features by going to Settings > Location > Google Location Reporting.

Disable Google Now cards
Now is an unmatched personal assistant, but some of its services -- which come in the form of informational "cards" -- are tireless battery drains.

For example, a card titled "Nearby places" shows you nearby attractions when you travel to a place that Google recognizes is out of your usual routine. Cool? Yes. Necessary? No.

To disable cards, go to Google Now, then scroll down to the very bottom, and tap the magic wand. Here, you can pick the cards you actually need. As a general guide, the GPS-reliant cards will demand the most battery, so disable cards like "Travel time" and "Nearby places" to see a battery boost.

Wi-Fi scanning:

It's well-known that when Wi-Fi is left enabled, more energy is used. However, on Android, even when Wi-Fi is disabled, a phone could still be searching for networks.

To make sure this isn't happening, head to Wi-Fi settings > Advanced. Here, uncheck the option for Wi-Fi scanning.

Going forward, you'll have to connect to Wi-Fi manually, but you'll get a longer battery life in return.

Use the battery tool:

If you're unsure how energy-demanding an app is, or you're wondering why your battery is draining so quickly, use the Battery tool. The feature shows you which apps use the most battery, with the top two items almost always being Screen and Wi-Fi.
